The game comes with an adventurer’s journal from the mysterious wizard Corak who states that the real goal is to stop his nemesis; a man named Sheltem from destroying the Isles. The game comes with a pretty involved and well written back story to add to the lore. I love the good old days when developers spent a lot of time on manuals and back ground story.

Who wants to use a prebuilt party? I know I didn’t, so I went into the inn and removed all of them and created my own party. It does take a bit of time to create a party but like all great RPG's that you are going to soak a long amount of your life into, you want the characters to be your own so creating a party of your own is quite enjoyable.

Your party will adventure through many towns, castles, outdoor forests, dungeons, caverns and more interesting places in MMIII. Once nice aspect of the game is the use of mirrors that will teleport you from town to town once you know the password. Not much fun having to walk back and forth once you have already explored that area.The interface is very similar to many other first person RPG's, with some nice additional features.

First off, the art work and graphics are very colorful and well done for the time. Your characters faces react to what affliction they are suffering from. If they are hit bad enough that their hit points drop below zero then their eye's will close to show they are unconcious, and if they are poisoned they have a look at if they are about to vomit, this aspect adds quite a bit of realism to the game.

The interface also has some gargoyles to notify you if you have a levitate spell active, or if there is a secret door in front of you. I found the secret door gargoyle quite helpful as well as the always handy Wizard eye spell that allows you to see your immediate map area in the upper right of the interface screen.This game does require quite a lot of exploration to discover what is going on, and those of you who need to be led around on a leash might want to skip this game as there are times when it’s not obvious what you are supposed to do next.

However, those of you who love to explore an open ended world old school style should love this game. MMIII can be rather hard at first if you venture into areas to advanced for your characters, I did die quite a lot of times in the early parts of the game.

I have to admit, I did reference a clue book walkthrough for this game a few times!The game has a very good musical score and each song changes to fit the mood of the environment you are in. The game is very heavy on the fighting side and light on dialogue and role-playing, but the combat system is fairy well-done. Terra-fying TripThe interface and commands used to interact with the game are honed to a point and are totally comprehensive. When you first play the game, the icon-based visual control system is very confusing, but after a few hours it becomes intuitive.

To the right of the smallish game-view window is a series of icons that let you put your party to sleep, cast Spells, look at the map, and many other functions. Along the bottom of the screen are at-a-glance color bars to show the conditions of your party members.The graphics are good, but perhaps a bit repetitive.

Most of the walls look too similar, which can be confusing if you don't know what direction you're facing. The monster animation is very limited and not as detailed as it was in M&M II, and the graphics window could have been a lot bigger.The background music and sound effects are all top-notch, but also repetitive.

I mean, this one is fun, you can get into dungeons and all that, but still lacks something that the next ones would get great, a good feeling of progression. You see, I don't like getting into a dungeon to find I'll need to come back nobody knows when. And also I don't like finding that after cleaning of monsters half of the continent all the ones left are too easy to kill. This makes me forget what I have left to do and what not, because the game is more or less open, and you end having a place full of completed dungeons, dungeons with something left inside, places containing dungeons you can't still beat and nothing to tell you which is which.But otherwise is a great game.

You must notice this is the first authentic Might and Magic. The first was a copy of the wizardry, and the second an attempt to get something new.This is the first where you see monsters all around the place coming to you. And probably several other improvements I don't notice due to barely playing the second.Still, as said, it lacks polishment because the magic. well, I don't want to keep saying bad things about it, just I'll say the magic feels mostly useless except for a bunch of spells.

And you have lots of spells.Just take this as what it is, a dungeon crawler, an action filled RPG where you break down doors and kill everything on the other side to get money and treasures. And contains lots of nice details, like the journal, or having a variety of weapons and materials that change their properties. It is somewhat hard to get used to if you don't have a hintbook or take notes, but is a fun way to give you progressively better weapons.And of course the enemies are well drawn, and the places.

So the game looks great. But above all, it's a fast and fun RPG to play from time to time without worrying much about anything.
